Noni noni

Noni (lat. Morinda citrifolia) is a small fruit tree belonging to the Rubiaceae family. In science, this crop is also called Morinda citrus folia.

Description

Noni is a small tree, the height of which usually does not exceed seven meters, and the depth of its roots can reach twenty-one meters. The shiny dark green leaves of this plant are deeply dotted with miniature veins. Noni”s small tubular flowers, abundantly filled with nectar, are painted white, and the oval, potato-shaped fruits contain a huge number of tiny seeds and reach a length of four to seven centimeters. Unripe fruits are usually colored greenish, but as they ripen they turn light yellow or white, and their skin becomes almost transparent.

Edible noni fruits have a rather pungent odor (similar to the smell of moldy spoiled cheese) and have a bitter and very unpleasant aftertaste. With all this, on a number of Pacific islands (Rarotonga, Samoa, Fiji) they are the main food product.

Morinda citrusfolia is good because it both blooms and bears fruit throughout the year. And the fruits of this plant are harvested monthly! In general, it takes about ninety days for noni fruits to ripen. At the same time, fruits of unequal maturity can easily coexist on the same branch.
