Ziziphora tenuior is an annual herbaceous plant, ranging in height from five to thirty centimeters. Its stem can be either branched or straight, covered in short hairs. Its leaves are few, no longer than two and a half centimeters. The leaves are lanceolate and can be either rough or glabrous. It’s worth noting that the bracts of this plant are very similar to the stem leaves. The false whorls are few-flowered and axillary, forming spike-shaped inflorescences approximately two to twenty-two centimeters long. The flowers, no more than one centimeter long, are borne on rather short peduncles. The calyx of the thin ziziphora is narrowly cylindrical with short teeth.

This plant blooms from May to August. In the wild, the thin ziziphora is found in the European part of Russia in the Lower Don and Black Sea regions, as well as in the Irtysh region of Western Siberia, Crimea, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Ziziphora tonica has valuable medicinal properties. The fruits, juice, and herb of this plant are recommended for medicinal purposes. The herb includes the leaves, flowers, and stems. These valuable medicinal properties are due to the plant’s content of coumarin, vitamin C, essential oil, and flavonoids. Furthermore, the seeds of Ziziphora tonica contain fatty oil, and the hydrolyzed product contains stearic, palmitic, linoleic, linolenic, and oleic acids.

It’s worth noting that an infusion of this plant’s herb is used in Turkmenistan as a cardiotonic for diarrhea, intestinal colic, and neurasthenia. In folk medicine, ziziphora juice is recommended for gastralgia and pulmonary tuberculosis: drink one dessert spoon of this juice two to three times daily. A decoction of ziziphora herb is also used as a stomachic and cardiotonic. An infusion of this plant’s herb is used as a general tonic for children, and a decoction of the fruit is recommended for fever and dysentery.

It’s worth noting that ziziphora is also used as a spice for cooking fish.

For neurasthenia, diarrhea, and intestinal colic, the following ziziphora-based remedy is recommended: to prepare this remedy, take one tablespoon of dry, crushed ziziphora herb per cup of boiling water. The resulting mixture should be left to steep for two hours in a sealed container, then thoroughly strained. Adults should take one-third to one-quarter of a glass of this remedy, while children should take one dessert spoon three times daily before meals. It’s worth noting that this Ziziphora-based remedy can also be used as a cardiotonic and a general tonic for children.
