These leaves of sweetgrass are covered with soft hairs, and they may also be bare. The spike-shaped inflorescences are approximately three to six centimeters long and consist of single-flowered spikelets with four glumes. There are only two stamens, and four glumes, which can reach ten millimeters in length, with two glumes bearing awns. The glumes of the fragrant spikelet are membranous.

The fragrant spikelet blooms from May to August. In the wild, this plant can be found in the forest-steppe and steppe regions of Russia, as well as in Ukraine and the Caucasus, Siberia, and the northern regions of Central Asia.
