Giving a woman roses indicates her importance to the giver, emphasizing the status of a beauty, because it is not without reason that these elegant flowers are considered luxurious and one of the most expensive. And they deserve it, because caring for the queens of the garden is very difficult. Especially when it comes to preparing for wintering and how to properly cover roses for the winter.

How to prune roses for the winter

It is very important that the number of above-ground shoots corresponds to the volume root system, otherwise the plant will not cope with its own nutrition and will die. To determine how many roots a particular bush has, it is not at all necessary to dig it up and look. The description of each type indicates what type of pruning is required for the sprout. There are three in total:

1) weak pruning: a significant number of branches are left, cut after the 9th bud, counting from bottom to top;

2) medium: shoots beyond the 5th bud are removed. Representatives of some species begin to bush more after such an operation in the spring;

3) strong: a minimum remains above the ground, everything is cut off, only one or two buds remain. This type is recommended for certain species that reproduce in the soil and from there they sprout new shoots.

If you are not dealing with a bush, but with a single trunk, then you need to pinch the top to stimulate the plant to force new shoots and branches in the spring. After several such manipulations, roses sometimes begin to grow on their own, then stop pruning.

Sheltering roses for the winter

Rose bushes are susceptible to freezing, so care should be taken to provide shelter for the winter. During the October cold snap, start trimming the stems, removing leaves, treating the entire above-ground area with a nitrophen solution, and watering a solution of iron sulfate under the roots. Also sprinkle sand around and on the bush. During positive degrees, it is necessary to tilt and fix the shoots. Build a roof of wooden planks on top of everything existing, cover the top and sides with polyethylene.

Do not close the end side immediately, do this around November, so that sub-zero temperatures will also reign inside and there will be no greenhouse. However, before walling up, check that there is no snow and ice to avoid the formation of rot and mold.

The structure should be strengthened and insulated with snow (or leaves, sawdust in case of a snowless winter). It will maintain a constant temperature inside and prevent the death of roses better than any other materials.
