Paphiopedilum

Paphiopedilum is extremely rarely cultivated. Plants belonging to this genus are sometimes called lady’s slippers, a translation from Greek.
The word “Paphos” is the name of a Greek island, and the second part of the plant’s name means “slipper” or “sandal.” The flower itself is shaped like a slipper, which is the main difference between this genus and all other members of the orchid family.
The plants were first described at the beginning of the twentieth century, and today more than seventy species are known. It’s worth noting that new species are constantly being discovered. In the wild, these plants grow in the tropics, subtropics, and mountainous regions. All species are terrestrial.
Plant Description
This plant is distinguished by its distinctive flower shape; the vast majority of species produce very large, dense, and waxy flowers. The flowering period of these flowers is very long. The shape and color of these flowers can vary greatly, with some plants reaching up to thirty centimeters in length.
Paphiopedilum Care
It should be noted that this plant can be either heat-loving or cold-loving. The species can be easily identified by its leaves. Cold-loving species have green leaves. These species require very cool nighttime temperatures, approximately ten to twelve degrees Celsius. Daytime temperatures should also not exceed twenty-four degrees Celsius, although plants can adapt to these warmer conditions over time. Heat-loving species have leaves that are quite variegated. Nighttime temperatures for these species should not fall below fifteen degrees Celsius, which is why they are considered ideal for indoor cultivation.
It is also important to remember that representatives of this genus are not demanding of high light levels and can thrive even in partial shade. As for the substrate, you will need breathable, moisture-retentive and nutritious soil.
Paphiopedilums do not have a particularly clearly marked dormant period; for this reason, the plant should be watered in the same way all year round. It is also important to remember that literally all plants cannot tolerate drying out of the soil. Therefore, you will need to regularly keep the soil sufficiently moist. However, with all this, you should not over-water the plant. The plant should also be sprayed, but water should not remain in the rosette of leaves, otherwise the plant may rot.
Plant propagation
Most often, propagation of this plant occurs through division, but it is important to remember that each division must have at least three sprouts. If you are going to propagate the plant through seeds, then you will need to create certain conditions.
Most common plant species
Paphiopedilum remarkable is a rather large plant, the leaves of which are colored green, and the flowers are quite large – up to about thirteen centimeters in diameter.
Paphiopedilum pretty is a species plant that has very beautiful spotted leaves and rather large white flowers that have purple spots. The peduncle of this plant is quite short; most often the flower does not particularly rise above the rosette of leaves.
Paphiopedilum sandera is particularly decorative; this plant looks gorgeous, and quite a lot of flowers bloom at one time.
