Draconis fruticosa is a perennial subshrub. Its rhizome is thick, about five to fifteen millimeters thick, woody, and dark brown in color. Its stems are erect and fairly numerous, reaching a height of about fifteen to thirty centimeters. The leaves of Draconis fruticosa can be lanceolate-ovate or ovate. The flowers are borne on short peduncles, and at the ends of the stems, these flowers are clustered into a dense, short inflorescence, one to three centimeters long and one and a half to two centimeters wide. The calyx of this plant is colored in purple tones and is ten millimeters long.
The flowering period of the fruticose dragonhead begins in July and ends in August. In the wild, this plant is found in the Altai Mountains of Western Siberia, as well as in the western regions of Eastern Siberia and in the Angara-Sayan and Daurian regions. It prefers scree slopes and rocky slopes up to the mid-mountain zone.
