Low Goat’s tongue is a member of the Asteraceae or Compositae family. Its Latin name is Scorzonera humilis L.

As for the family name itself, the Latin name is Asteraceae Dumort or Compositae Giseke.

Description of Low Goat’s tongue

Low Goat’s tongue is also known by the following common names: snake’s tongue, white fluff, goat’s tongue, buttercup, snake’s tongue, early goat’s tongue, adder’s tongue, tripuffel, cosmatic, and perelet. Low Goat’s tongue is a perennial herb with a thick, vertical root and elliptical basal leaves. These leaves form a rosette at the very base of the stem, which is covered with sheaths of dead, brown-colored leaves. The flowers of the low salsify are yellow in color and have fairly large heads with a woolly involucre at the base. The outer leaflets of this plant are ovate, while the inner ones are narrowly lanceolate and pointed, and are somewhat obtuse at the very apex. It’s worth noting that the ray florets are almost twice as long as the involucre. There are only five stamens, attached by filaments to the corolla tubes. The anthers are linear and unite into a tube through which the style extends. The style of the low salsify is filiform, and in male flowers it is undivided. The ovary of this plant is inferior and unilocular, bearing a single, erect ovule located at the bottom of the ovary.

The fruit of the low salsify is an achene with a feathery pappus. In the wild, this plant is found in the European part of Russia, the Baltics, the southern Carpathians, and the Dnieper region of Ukraine. Low salsify prefers shrubby habitats, forest clearings, peat bogs, and open forests.

Description of the medicinal properties of low salsify

Low salsify has valuable medicinal properties, and the leaves and roots of this plant are recommended for medicinal purposes. Low salsify has very effective laxative, diuretic, diaphoretic, wound-healing, and expectorant properties.

As for traditional medicine, the roots of the low goat grass are quite widely used here, which are used in the form of poultices for toothache, and also in the form of a decoction. This decoction is recommended for use for various liver diseases and gout, and also as an expectorant and laxative. Fresh roots and fresh leaves of this plant should be used topically on snake bites.

For constipation, it is recommended to use the following remedy based on this plant: take about two to four tablespoons of freshly squeezed low goat juice per glass of whey.

The following remedy based on this plant is used as a laxative: to prepare such a remedy you will need to take thirty grams of crushed roots of the low goat grass in four hundred milliliters of water. The resulting mixture should be boiled until about two hundred and forty milliliters are left, after which such a mixture based on low goat should be cooled and filtered thoroughly. Take the resulting remedy based on this plant on an empty stomach, two to three tablespoons.

The following remedy is used as an expectorant: to prepare it, take ten grams of crushed roots per two hundred milliliters of water. The resulting mixture is boiled for eight to ten minutes in a sealed container, then infused for one hour, after which it is carefully filtered. Take this remedy three times a day, one or two tablespoons.
