Characteristics and classification
The marking “75W140” indicates the SAE viscosity grade. The first number (75W) means low temperature viscosity. The oil remains fluid at temperatures down t o-40 °C, ensuring crankability of mechanisms in winter. The second number (140) determines the high-temperature viscosity. It guarantees a stable, durable oil film at high temperatures – up to +35 °C and above, protecting parts from wear.
Oil quality is determined by API standards (for example, GL-4 or GL-5) and vehicle manufacturer specifications. GL-5 oils contain more extreme pressure additives for hypoid gears. It is critical to use oil that meets the tolerances specified in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.
What is 75W140 oil used for?
This oil is intended for heavily loaded transmissions operating in harsh conditions. It is not universal for all vehicles.
Where it is recommended to use the product:
- Manual transmissions, transfer cases and axles of heavy SUVs and commercial vehicles.
- Drive axles with hypoid transmission, especially for heavy loads or towing trailers.
- Some sports cars where transmissions are subject to extreme thermal stress.
- Special equipment and trucks operating under constant high load.
When changing oil, you must ensure that its technical specifications (for example, API GL-4, GL-5 or higher) meet the tolerances required for a particular unit. Particular attention should be paid to the compatibility of materials (for example, brass in synchronizers) with the chemical composition of the additives.
