Under natural conditions, this plant is found in the following regions of the Far East: in the Amur region and Primorye, on Sakhalin and in the Okhotsk region, as well as in the Kuril Islands on the islands of Kunashir and Shikotan. For growth, brown clematis prefers open slopes, mixed-grass meadows, coastal forests, places along the edges of forests, thickets of bushes and railway embankments.
