Descurainia sophia is an annual herbaceous plant with a stem with spreading branches. This stem, like the leaves themselves, is grayish due to the abundant pubescence, and its height ranges between twenty and eighty centimeters. The leaves of this plant are bipinnate or tripinnate. Descurainia sophiaii flowers are quite small, pale yellow in color, and feature four petals that form narrow, spike-like racemes.
The peduncles of this plant are initially thin, but when bearing fruit, they become as long as the pod. Descurainia sophiaii fruits are linear and curved, resembling dehiscent pods. The pods taper toward the top and are pressed against the peduncle. The seeds are quite numerous, about one and a half to two centimeters long. These seeds are finely tuberculated and reddish-brown in color. Descurainia sophiaii has a radish-like aroma and a rather pungent, pungent taste.
This plant blooms from June to July, and fruiting begins in August. In the wild, this plant can be found in Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and throughout Russia, including the Far East and Siberia, but excluding the Arctic regions. Descurainia sofii prefers locations along roadsides and near dwellings, meadows, fallow lands, fields, and saline areas.
Description of the medicinal properties of Descurainia sofii
Descurainia sofii possesses very valuable medicinal properties. For medicinal purposes, it is recommended to use the herb, roots, flowers, and young pods of this plant. The roots of this plant should be harvested after the fruits ripen, which occurs approximately in August-September. The seeds should be harvested as the pods ripen. During flowering, the herb and leaves should be harvested.
It should be noted that traditional medicine quite widely uses the healing properties of this plant. Desurainia sophia is endowed with antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antiemetic, stimulant, anthelmintic, hemostatic and expectorant effects. An infusion of the herb of this plant is used for dysentery, edema, kidney and cholelithiasis, as well as for hysterical seizures. A concentrated infusion of the herb of this plant is used to wash purulent wounds, ulcers and boils.
The herb of this plant contains coumarins, alkaloids, mustard oil, saponins, and beta-sitosterol. Descuraynia sophia seeds contain fatty and organic acids.
For cholelithiasis, it is recommended to use the following remedy: to prepare it, it is recommended to take one tablespoon of Desurainia sophia herb per glass of boiling water. The resulting mixture based on this plant should be infused for two hours, after which this mixture is filtered very carefully. Take this remedy based on Descurainia sophia, one tablespoon three times a day before meals.
