Henderson succession

Henderson sequence

Henderson string (lat. Bidens hendersonensis) is one of the species of plants of the genus Bidens (lat. Bidens), which differs from most of its relatives, herbaceous plants, in having a woody stem.

Shrubs and low trees with thin trunks have chosen the only place on the planet for their life — two small islands, Henderson and Oeno, lost in the vastness of the Great Pacific Ocean.

What”s in your name

The Latin word “Bidens” reflects the fruit of the plant, which is an achene, armed by evolution with two sharp spines similar to teeth. Indeed, when translated into a language we understand, the word “Bidens” is a compound word from the words “two” and “tooth.”

The adjective “Henderson” indicates the place of growth of this species of Chered. This place is one of five islands in the Pitcairn island group. The underwater volcanoes of the Pacific Ocean, in collaboration with coral reefs, brought to life these five islands in the southern part of the largest water ocean on Earth. Although Henderson Island is the largest in area, people chose Pitcairn Island to live because it has richer sources of fresh water.

Nature also took care of Henderson Island, which has a spring of drinking water. But its reserves did not inspire confidence in people, and therefore, the most extensive island of the group (about 37 square kilometers out of 47 across all five islands) remained completely at the mercy of small animals, an impressive number of different birds (some of which can only be seen on this island), and also at the mercy of the planet”s plant life.

More than six dozen plant species thrive on Henderson Island. Of such a huge number of species, nine stand out that do not want to live in other lands of the planet, but have firmly settled on Henderson. Among these nine species is the Henderson”s string, which deservedly bears the adjective “Hendersonian” in its name due to its patriotism.

Description

Apparently, the absence of people on the island who love to use the gifts of the plant world, without caring about the consequences for plants, allowed the Henderson herbaceous plant to turn from a herbaceous plant into a shrub or even low trees.

Together with other types of plants, Henderson”s succession shrubs have formed impenetrable shrub-forest thickets on the island, walks through which are deadly for humans. Indeed, under the dense vegetation cover there are hidden treacherous karst pits, easily created in the coral deposits of the island.

The isolation of the islands from densely populated areas of the planet allowed the Henderson plant not only to degenerate from a herbaceous plant into a woody one, but also to create some varieties.

As a result, two variants of the Cereda reside on Henderson Island. This is a type species, called the “hendersonensis” variant, included in one of the Red Books of the planet, and the “subspathulata” variant, which also has the status of a plant species protected by Humanity, which decided to change the typical shape of the leaves and inflorescences-baskets.

The third option lives on Oeno Island, also one of the five “Pitcairn” islands lost in the South Pacific Ocean. It is called the “oenoensis” variant and differs from the type species in having larger leaves, but smaller bush sizes and fewer typical inflorescences-baskets in the overall inflorescence-brush. Even the absence of people on Oeno Island, who only occasionally come here from inhabited Pitcairn to stock up on leaves of the Pandanus tree, from the veins of which they weave rugs and other things to decorate their simple life, could not save the plant from the status of “on the verge of extinction.”
