How to grow vegetables on the balcony
growing vegetables in your own garden is a common activity. Numerous fans of healthy eating and wildlife spend all their free time in the garden beds and know everything about it. By the way, growing a variety of crops at home is now popularized. In this case, sometimes experienced gardeners may have questions.
On a kitchen window sill or city balcony it is quite possible to successfully grow most green crops, cucumbers, peppers, mini tomatoes, herbs, and salads. I must say that in this place the work is progressing even more successfully than in the open ground, since at home the plants are protected from sudden temperature changes, weather surprises, pests and many diseases.
Including several tubs with garden plants will fit on a small, modest balcony. Well, on a large, wide balcony there is an opportunity to develop a productive vegetable garden, while not forgetting about its eye-catching decorative value. And if your balcony or loggia is insulated and glazed, then you can grow balcony vegetables almost all year round.

What do they grow?

A home garden is a life activity not for the purpose of a large harvest, but of course for the sake of contemplating the process itself. In such a garden, delicious greens ripen most quickly – various salads, green onions, parsley, basil, cilantro, dill. You can also easily grow, for example, cucumbers. But during the winter cultivation of these garden crops, one should not forget about the need for additional lighting.
Eggplants, peppers, and tomatoes are perennial plants and can be grown all year round with sufficient light and warmth. With good care and regular feeding, these crops can grow and bear fruit within two years.
However, if for some reason you cannot create suitable conditions, it is best to start sowing seeds in mid-March, and planting mature plants in early May. To create a home mini-vegetable garden, you can use seeds of ordinary varieties of greens, eggplants, peppers, short tomatoes, and parthenocarpic cucumbers. There are general wishes that must be remembered and taken into account when choosing the type of variety. They must:

  • Be high-yielding and compact,
  • Be resistant to lack of lighting and low air humidity,
  • It grows well under phytolamp (artificial light).

However, it is best for these purposes to sow specially bred varieties and hybrids, those that will produce a high-quality harvest in low light conditions and will grow freely under phytolight. Don’t be afraid to experiment and grow vegetables at home, it’s a very exciting activity! From an ordinary windowsill you can harvest a good harvest of peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, and even berry lovers can grow garden strawberries on the windowsill.
