care and Growing Garden Calla Lilies
Garden calla lilies prefer shaded areas with fertile, slightly acidic soil. Heavy clay soils are improved by adding sand and peat. If possible, it is best to plant garden calla lilies next to an artificial lake in light shade. Garden callas require gentle watering, increasing the amount during hot and dry weather. During active growth, the flowers are fertilized. Throughout the summer, they are fed up to three times with water mixed with vinegar or citric acid (1 tablespoon of acid per bucket of water). In the fall, usually in early September, before the first frost, the above-ground callas are dug up and left for about a week in a ventilated area at room temperature. After this time, the leaves are removed from the tubers and the roots are trimmed. In winter, they are stored in a cool (5-10°C) and dry place, usually in a basement or refrigerator, in paper bags or plastic bags with sawdust, for two months.
note:
when purchasing garden callas, pay attention to the condition and size of the tubers. It is much better to choose large tubers that do not show signs of drying out.
propagation
the plant is propagated by rhizomes, suckers, tubers, or seeds. Flowers are planted in open ground both sprouted and unsprouted. The only difference is that sprouted tubers will begin to bloom much earlier in these conditions. In the first half of March or early April, they are planted in pots with the rounded side of the tuber facing down and the emerging buds, which look like bumps, facing up. Before planting, the flowers are soaked in a light solution of potassium permanganate for 2-3 hours. The damaged area is treated with a disinfectant, such as brilliant green. The planting depth is 2-3 cm. After planting, the tubers are watered.
Unsprouted calla lily tubers are planted in open ground after the danger of frost has passed, usually in early May. Flowers are planted at a depth of up to 10 cm.
diseases and Pests
Flowers are susceptible to leaf mosaic disease. Whiteflies are a prominent pest.
