Description of Mountain Clover

Mountain clover is a perennial herbaceous plant, growing from ten to thirty-five centimeters tall. Its root is straight, taprooted, and woody. The lower leaves of mountain clover are borne on long petioles, ranging in length from ten to twenty centimeters. The stem leaves, two to four in number, are borne on short petioles. Mountain clover leaflets are grayish in color, stiff, and elliptical in shape, growing on short petioles. These leaflets are 1. 5 to 6 centimeters long and about 1 to 2 centimeters wide. The plant’s flower heads are typically two per stem, supported by long, densely hairy stalks. The corolla of this plant is white, and the pods are usually two-seeded.

Mountain clover flowers in June, and fruiting begins in July. In the wild, this plant is found in European Russia, Belarus, the Caucasus, Western Siberia, Primorye in the Far East, Ukraine, and the Aral-Caspian region of Central Asia. It prefers forest edges, grassy slopes, dry meadows, mountain meadows, and meadow steppes.
