Swertia obtusa is a perennial, herbaceous, green-colored plant. Its height ranges from fifteen to eighty centimeters. The rhizome of Swertia obtusa is ascending and is supported by root shoots. The stem is simple, sparsely branched, and erect. Swertia obtusa’s leaves are elliptical and alternate, ranging from one and a half to three and a half centimeters wide, with the upper leaves being smaller and sessile. The flowers of this plant are borne at the very top of the stem in a racemose panicle on rather thin peduncles, and the calyx is five-lobed. The corolla of Swertia obtusa is a dirty purple, though it can rarely be white, and its lobes are approximately twelve to fifteen millimeters in diameter. The capsule of this plant is oblong-ovate in shape, and the seeds are large and kidney-shaped, measuring two to two and a half millimeters in diameter.
Swertia obtusa blooms from July to October. In the wild, this plant is found in Central Asia, the Altai region of Western Siberia, the Trans-Volga region of Bashkortostan, and the Daurian, Yenisei, and Angara-Sayan regions of Eastern Siberia. This plant prefers swampy riverbanks and streams, damp meadows, placers, rocky slopes, alpine tundra, and mid- and high-altitude zones. It is noteworthy that Swertia obtusa is a highly ornamental plant.
